About Me
My name is Grant Doyle, a lifelong professional musician. I started singing in choirs and performing on stage, picking up the guitar at 12.
With a 35-year career, I’ve sung 100 roles in 145 productions across the UK, Europe, and Australia, plus hundreds of oratorio and recital concerts, including over 40 solo performances at the Royal Albert Hall. I’ve trained with top teachers worldwide, studying classical technique, musicianship, languages, acting, and stagecraft, and have had the honor of working with some of opera’s greatest talents and leading conductors and directors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Music (with Honours) – University of Adelaide
- Advanced Postgraduate diploma (Opera performance) – Royal College of Music, London (Distinction)
- AMEB Grade 6 Theory (Distinction)
- Enhanced DBS check to work with children and vulnerable adults.
I primarily perform as a singer but have played guitar and bass in bands since my teens. I’ve also taught guitar, bass, flute, clarinet, and keyboard and worked as a choir conductor, arranger, session musician, actor, and producer.
From my garden studio in Eltham, South East London, I teach singing, guitar, and bass for all ages and levels, with a special focus on students interested in combining singing with guitar, bass, or keyboard. I also offer music production lessons, guiding students in composition, production, multi-track recording, and mixing.
What I Offer
Guitar & Bass
If you’re keen on the guitar, I will teach you to master guitar or bass and fully immerse yourself in the music. Guitar is a perfect instrument to begin your journey in music, and perfect to accompany your voice. I mainly teach rock and pop styles, but initially trained as a classical player, and have a strong knowledge of jazz chords and theory.
I customize each lesson to fit my students’ needs and abilities, drawing from resources like sheet music, tutor books, online multimedia, and custom exercises. My goal is to make learning enjoyable, and I’m glad to work on styles that match each student’s personal taste.
If you wish to gain a recognised qualification I also offer my students complete preparation for ROCK SCHOOL or Trinity Rock and Pop graded exams. These are a great way to rate your progress providing structure and goals.
Grant has been teaching my 10 year old daughter bass guitar (and music theory) for approximately 18 months, in a lovely studio at his home. We have a regular weekly slot, but Grant is flexible when we need to re-arrange occasionally around other commitments. Grant is an engaging teacher, who plans varied and interesting lessons which my daughter enjoys immensely. Highly recommend!

Singing
If you’re looking to refine your singing, I offer voice training for all styles, ages, and abilities. My lessons cover vocal technique, musicianship, languages, stagecraft, microphone technique, and professional etiquette. I encourage students to explore different genres and expand their repertoire. Drawing from my experience in hundreds of concerts, I provide practical tips to help you perform with confidence and flair. I create a supportive and inspiring environment to help you grow and enjoy every step of your musical journey.
I have the expertise to help those guitarists or bassists who would like to improve their singing, or singers who would like to learn an instrument as well. Such tuition can be very useful for singer/songwriters or those who are already in a band, and wish to become a singer guitarist or bassist. I have advanced theory knowledge and experience in how to approach and arrange backing vocals.
Online Lessons
Since the lockdown in March 2020, I have been offering singing, guitar and bass lessons online over Zoom. I find this to be the most convenient and reliable platform.
If you would like to take lessons from the convenience of your home then please make an enquiry below.
I can advise you on what equipment you will need for effective lessons. There are specific needs for bass students due to the limitations of standard laptop and smart phone microphones.
For singing lessons alone, you will need a separate device from which to play backing tracks, e.g. a Bluetooth speaker or stereo system. One important thing, often overlooked, is that you will need to be able to read your charts and music as well as view the teacher. Therefore, you either need a separate iPad, a multiscreen setup, or go old school with a printer and ring binder!
